A message from Elmer Estacio, 2022 SPP President

To my dear colleagues at the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas:

On behalf of the SPP 2022 National Council, I would like to thank you for the support that you have extended to the Samahan in its activities this year. As we transition into the coming year, let us welcome the next national council officers and wish them well with their plans and activities for 2023. I am sure that with SPP’s support, they will achieve great success.

This year, the national council faced unique challenges as we brought back the in-person platform for the 40th SPP National Conference and Annual Meeting, while maintaining its online component. We practically organized two, interacting events; all within the bounds of limitations brought about by the pandemic. In addition, we included pre- and post-conference workshops that catered to the technology industry and to physics educators, respectively. I would like to think that with the support of the Samahan and its council of officers, the staff and volunteers, Bicol University, DOST-STII, and our loyal sponsors, we have been successful in carrying out these events. Every year, the pinnacle of the SPP’s activity is exemplified by the national conference, but the 2022 National Council can add to its list of accomplishments the amendment of the Article of Incorporation, which includes the correction of our organization’s name. We have co-sponsored events organized by physics student organizations from UP Los Baños and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. In collaboration with the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao, and under the stewardship of Dr. Perry Esguerra, we brought back the formal national qualifying examinations and training for the Philippine Physics Olympiad; with our national team bagging two awards at the 52nd IPhO. Under the auspices of an MOU with JSAP and Optica, we were part of the 83rd Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) Autumn Meeting Joint Symposia held in September. In addition, we have maintained our AAPPS membership and have even endorsed a member of the Samahan as a senior editor for the AAPPS Bulletin.

With that, the 2022 SPP National Council bids you farewell. Maraming salamat po sa tiwala at sa binigay ninyong pagkakataon upang makapaglingkod sa inyo. We wish everyone a happy new year. This is your 2022 SPP National Council, signing off.

Dr. Elmer Estacio
SPP 2022 President
