The Philippine-American Academy of Science & Engineering (PAASE) organized Dr. Mario Martone’s online lecture Understanding Geometry Through Nature and Nature Through Geometry. The webinar was held on 6 November 2020 at 8AM (Friday, Philippine Time) or 5 November 2020 at 8PM (Thursday, US Eastern Time).
A recording of the webinar is available at this YouTube link.
About the webinar
Since the early days of calculus and classical mechanics, physics and mathematics have been in a symbiotic relationship. The physics of the 20th (and 21st!) century has brought this relation to yet new highs with no end of exciting new results in sight! We will explore these con nections starting from Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. In this context I will review the singularity theorem which granted Roger Pen rose this year’s physics Nobel prize. I will then turn to Supersymmetry and String Theory and the fascinating world of complex geometry which continues to inspire physicists and mathematicians worldwide, transforming our understanding of reality.
About the speaker
Mario Martone is a Theoretical Physicist and Research Assistant Professor with a joint position at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at The State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was born and raised in Italy and obtained his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He has done work in a wide variety of topics ranging from quantum gravity to the physics of particle acceler ators. His current research program focuses on the overlaps between high-energy physics and abstract mathematics.
Mario Martone was an Invited Speaker at the 2019 SPP Physics Conference in Bohol, where he talked about superconformal field theory.
The First Circular for the 9th Jagna International Workshop: Stochastic Analysis – Mathematical Methods and Real World Models (8-18 January 2020) has been released.
This Workshop is part of series that is organized by the Research Center for Theoretical Physics at the Central Visayan Institute Foundation in Jagna, Bohol. Please click on the attached circular below for more information.
Mark Nolan Confesor is the Principal Investigator of the Soft Matter and Biological Physics Laboratory and the Program Leader of the Complex Systems Group at PRISM, MSU–IIT.
Professor Mark Nolan Confesor is one of the 2022 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Awardees for Teachers. The prestigious career-service award recognizes Filipino exemplars in the academe, the military, and the police force. It honors the excellence and sacrifices of Filipino teachers, soldiers, and police officers who have gone over and beyond the call of duty to serve their profession and their community. The Award will be officially conferred on 05 September 2022 as part of Metrobank’s anniversary celebrations.
Dr. Confesor is a professor and researcher at the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) at the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology. He initiated the creation of the Soft Matter and Biological Physics Laboratory (SMBPL) in 2013, which has received research grants from government agencies such as the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council of Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), and MSU–IIT.
He served as the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics of MSU–IIT from 2016 to 2019. He has served as the President of the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) and is currently a National Councilor of the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas.
In celebration of International Medical Physics Week (IWMP), the Society of Medical Physicists in the Republic of the Philippines (SMPRP) will hold its annual Philippine Conference on Medical Physics (PCMP) online on 26–30 of April 2021.
The conference aims to gather nationwide participation of medical physicists across different subspecialties. This will serve as a venue for participants to share their innovations through research, technology, and showcase good clinical practice. The event also serves as a fitting opportunity to discuss the updates of national regulatory bodies concerning the medical use of radiation.
SPP is a member society of the AAPPS and is now accepting nominations for the AAPPS-APCTP Chen-Ning Yang Award. Nominees should demonstrate a commitment to both excellence in scientific research and development of leaders in physics in the Asia Pacific region. Please send your nomination package to hq@spp-online.org on or before 15 February 2022.
The following award guidelines are provided in the C.N. Yang Award website.
Background
The CN Yang Award has been established to honor young researchers with prominent research achievements and to promote the development of leaders in physics in the Asia Pacific region. The Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS) and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) have jointly established the AAPPS-APCTP Chen-Ning Yang Award (C.N. Yang Award).
Eligibility
Nomination Package
Selection Process
A selection committee, appointed by the AAPPS Division, the AAPPS and the APCTP, shall determine the recipient of the prize from the nominations, taking into account the overall quality and significance of the contribution and the creativity exhibited in the contribution.
Prize
The prize consists of a US$1000 monetary prize and a certificate for each recipient. The prizes will be presented to the awardees by the AAPPS President at the C.N. Yang Award Ceremony at the AAPPS HQ, and the recipients are invited to give talks and publish review papers to the AAPPS Bulletin.
